Microsoft SQL Server 2014

As SQL Server 2014 becomes more prevalent for installation consideration we are pleased to confirm that, whilst not officially certified with SLX at this time, performing in-house testing shows that this platform works with Saleslogix v6.2.6 upwards.

There are two caveats to be aware of:

• With Saleslogix v6.2.6 to v7.5.0 you are required to use the SQL Native Client from SQL Server 2008. This is because the SLX Connection Manager will not be looking for versions higher than this and, even if SQLNCLI for 2012/2014 is installed, it will not allow a connection to be configured. When you go to make a connection no error is returned but, similarly, it will simply not show the configuration page (just returns back). You can download just the SQLNCLI.MSI (or 64bit) for 2008 and install on the SLXServer & clients – even if the database server is SQL 2012/2014 – and a successful configuration can then be made.
• However, if you are using Saleslogix v8.1 SNC02 or higher, do not upgrade the version of SQL Native Client to beyond that of the SQL Server (i.e. SQL Native Client 2012/2014 for SQL Server 2008). This is because Saleslogix will detect the SQL Native Client 2012/2014 and will re-parse all SLX queries to utilise page hints (OFFSET/FETCH) which are newly provided in SQL Server 2012. These queries will fail in any version of SQL Server earlier than 2012, leading to group issues.

Saleslogix v8.0 Web & Concep Global

We are pleased to announce that we have released an update to our integration with Concep for Saleslogix Marketing Campaigns. This will enable the submission of email campaign targets to Concep, with full click-through integration back into Saleslogix automatically. The LAN/Network version & Saleslogix v8.0 Web are now fully supported.

31-10-2013 — Saleslogix 7.5.0 – 7.5.3 Critical Fix Only Status

Due to the ever changing IT environment and market, we need to focus our resources on 7.5.4, 8.0 and the imminent release of 8.1.  Therefore Swiftpage are announcing that Saleslogix versions 7.5.0 thru 7.5.3 are moving to Critical Fix Only Status.

Customers using Saleslogix v7.5.0 thru v7.5.3 can still expect fixes for security issues and data loss issues. Other issues, however, will not follow the usual escalation path and will not be escalated for advanced troubleshooting. Additionally, Service Level Agreement resolution times no longer apply. No official product retirement date has yet been announced.

Customers with active support plans for Saleslogix v7.5.0 thru v7.5.3 will continue to receive support until their contract expires. We encourage customers to learn more about Saleslogix v8.x and explore upgrade options to this current release.

Please Note: Despite the above – empath-e are pleased to continue support for customers currently on this release and will continue to do so using reasonable endeavours, subject to the above provisions.

Saleslogix v8.1

Saleslogix v8.1 is due for release in Autumn 2013. This update brings the following new enhancements and changes:

New Outlook integration features – As LAN users you may be familiar with the features.  If not, you should take a fresh new look at what they can do for you.  The new capabilities turbo charge how you manage your email.  The features utilise our Saleslogix Adaptive Client platform which integration fast and seamless.  Our platform allows us to put Saleslogix capabilities and your Saleslogix customer data where you work.  In this case it is from within Microsoft Outlook.  We all manage email as part of our daily tasks. Making it easier to manage interactions with customers and customer relationships is what Saleslogix is all about.  The new features will help bring that great customer data found, stored, managed, measured, and tracked in Saleslogix to your email in Microsoft Outlook.

Here are some of the highlights:  You can look up Saleslogix contacts based on groups. The system auto-resolves contact names.  Names appear as you type them into Outlook.  You can view Saleslogix details about a contact by view the contact properties.  Create distribution lists from an account or opportunity.  Attach Saleslogix library documents to your email.  Sync your information using our new desktop-based sync engine.  You can share your contact information or customer contact information as vCards.  vCard are nifty standard way of attaching contact information in a tidy sharable file.  And, the last notable gem is that its now 32 or 64-bit compatible.

Enhanced Reporting – A number of improvements are in store for how you work with, build and use reports.  First of all, Crystal Reports gets an upgrade.  We are upgrading the Crystal Reports engine.  We are also improving how you work with your favorite reports.  More details about reporting and ad-hoc reporting as we get closer to the release.

Improved Dashboards – Earlier this year we released three new dashboard widgets.  We will roll up the dashboard widgets into 8.1. The new widgets extend the capabilities of the Saleslogix dashboard so that you can pull data in to your personalized view.  Data can come from RSS feeds, SData, and web pages.  The new web page widget is a great way to embed “micro-sites” for corporate portals, FAQs and training material.

Better Integration with your Office Apps – We are upgrading a number of capabilities and features for how we integrate with desktop applications.   Outlook integration gets a new sync engine.  With a new engine we are able to support more types of integration.  The new sync engine will replace Intellisync and is based on our multi-year research and development efforts to bring sync to a whole new level and set the bar for next-generation sync engines.  Along with Outlook, we will introduce Google Apps integration.  Both desktop integration will include the ability to exchange email, contacts, tasks and activities.  Other features include 64-bit Office and Browser support for most desktop features and server-side export to Excel.

Enhanced Browser Support – Another big news item for 8.1 is that the Web Client will officially support Chrome and Safari as well as current versions of Firefox.  As browsers continue to lock down their architectures to better secure our desktop, we are moving away from desktop installed components and leveraging server-side services.  If a tighter integration is required for the desktop, Internet Explorer will be our platform for future desktop integration plug-ins.

Mobile gets Charts and KPIs a Fresh New Look – The team has been busy putting together an updated look and feel for Mobile.  The new mobile client leverages all of the great work by the behind-the-scenes Saleslogix platform team and brings you to a whole new way to work with your Saleslogix data.  You will need to see it to believe it.  If you are not smiling after seeing a demo of mobile, the new KPIs and charting will at least make you say “this is so cool!”

Windows XP & Office 2003 Retirement on April 8th 2014

Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001. As such, it will be 12 years old upon retirement! All Microsoft products have a guaranteed level of support to ensure usage for a minimum of 10 years and XP, due to its expansive use within businesses, has received two retirement reprieves since 2011. However, the time has come whereby Microsoft can no longer continue supporting it – given the level of threats, viruses, Trojans and security risks that come out every day.

Office 2003 was released on November 17, 2003. Since that time Office 2007, Office 2010 and Office 2013 have all been released and introduced the new file format (.docx, .xlsx) and, as above, it now exceeds the 10 year support duration.

As the owner or director we have sent you an email with planning information on what to do next and to ensure that you can speak with fellow directors and stakeholders.

We appreciate some companies will be able to execute the planning, but if you require us to perform any/all/some of the above please do get in touch and we will be glad to assist with this process.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 SP1

A brief test of Service Pack 1 shows no unusual issues when tested against SalesLogix v8.0.

Microsoft Office 2013

This was installed (32bit only) and no issues are expected. From what we can see, aside from the front screen, outline/taskbar & the menu bar receiving the “flattening” of Windows 8 there is very little new with the main applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook etc.

Microsoft Exchange 2013

This is currently being tested, no results are available at this time.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10

We recently tested Internet Explorer 10 (RP) from Microsoft and the results, so far, appear to be that this is Microsoft’s fastest browser ever! Testing against SalesLogix v7.5.4 and SalesLogix v8.0.0 shows render times far exceeding IE8 & 9 and no perceivable differences when compared to Google Chrome. If anything, there were slight improvements over Chrome, especially during the filter creation stage and the initial display of the NavBar and ListViews. Screen rendering also appears highly improved with a distinct lack of lag between screens and the whole screen refresh (highly noticeable in prior versions) being absent. Bear in mind, also, this is a Release Candidate and not finished product.

Microsoft Windows 8

Update: SalesLogix v8 Update 02 (18-03-2013) is now certified for Windows 8

With the release of Windows 8 (and Surface) on October 26th – we have installed SalesLogix v7.5.4 (we would also expect SalesLogix v8 to work) on Windows 8. There were zero issues – everything worked as expected and we didn’t notice anything major. Our test installation was composed of:

– Windows 8 Pro (x64) 6.2 Build 9200 – SQL Server 2008R2 w/SP1 (10.50.4000.0)

Note: SQL Server 2005 is not supported on Windows 8. SQL Server 2008 needs to be Service Pack 3 or higher and SQL Server 2008R2 needs to be Service Pack 1 or higher.

You will notice a delay whilst the database is attached – simply wait and it does return after a few minutes.

You will also find that the connection is created using MSSQL OLEDB. This needs to be dropped and changed to the Native Client connection. In addition, the normal “Persist Security” and “Integrated Security” needs to be altered using Connection Manager.

Microsoft Windows 2012

Update: SalesLogix v8 Update 05 (20-03-2013) is now certified for Windows 2012

Microsoft released Windows 2012 Release Candidate along with Windows 8 RP on 7th June 2012. We’ve run both in-house and will perform more in-depth testing upon release. Interesting, it’s what is not in this release that appears to be more interesting – most notably the removal of 16/32 bit OLEDB & ODBC Drivers. Given that the SLX Provider remains 32bit at this time then it will be interesting to see what changes that will involve.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 & SalesLogix v7.5.4 & v8.0.0

Microsoft released SQL Server 2012 on 7th March 2012. We have performed some initial testing on this release with SalesLogix. Unfortunately, the results are such that we cannot recommend an upgrade to SQL Server 2012 for users of SalesLogix at this time. Read more about our testing here. Update: 11/07/2012: As of SalesLogix v8 this version is now certified for SQL Server 2012. We have updated the document to reflect this change.

Microsoft Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 & Rollup 1

Microsoft released Service Pack 2 on 4th December 2011. A further update, Service Pack 2 Rollup 2 was released on 13th February 2012. We strongly encourage our customers using this version of Exchange to upgrade when they can to ensure they keep current with defect fixes and general improvements.

SQL Server 2012 (“Denali”)

SQL Server 2012 (“Denali”) RC0 was released on 3rd December with an expected full release in 1st Quarter 2012. This new release further improves Microsoft’s offering for reliability, scalability and performance. Importantly, it reduces the number of editions available – moving to a core based licensing model. You can read more about this new licensing scheme here. In essence, you now use the CAL based licensing as usual or core based licensing model – with a minimum of 4 cores to be licensed at any time. Core based is more economic for VM usage. Workgroup, DataCentre & Standard for SBS have been removed from the lineup. Express Editions remain as before, free for redistribution.

Microsoft drops OLEDB Support!

Microsoft have announced that the next release of SQL Server (“Denali”) will be the last to support OLEDB (although developers have 7 years to do this change). In what seems like a retrograde step to many – they are now reverting back to ODBC as the interface of choice when working with SQL Server. This is despite saying that ODBC was old technology and being deprecated only a few years ago! You can read more about this here.

Office 365 & 64Bit Support

Several customers have asked about this platform. We’d like to confirm that Office 365 (whereby Office/Exchange is hosted by Microsoft in their public/private cloud/data centres is a supported environment for SalesLogix except in the following circumstances:

• You must be running Office 2007 Service Pack 2 as a minimum requirement
• 64bit clients are not supported (of Office Outlook/Winword etc)
• You are not using Exchange Link (this is server-to-server) and needs to be local to your environment

We first reported the above issue in regard to 64bit version of Office in June 2010 but to “bubble up” this information, Microsoft still recommends installing Office 32bit (even when running on a 64bit platforms such as Windows 2008R2) if you are planning to utilise plugins for Outlook for example. We are attending the annual developer bootcamp in November where these issues will be discussed and will bring you more information about this in our monthly newsletter.

Office 2010 Service Pack 1

Microsoft have released Office 2010 Service Pack 1 for both 32bit and 64bit for general distribution. WARNING: If you have deleted your C:\MSOCache folder then you will be prompted for the full installation CD during the course of the upgrade. You can extract this from the original ISO/EXE using the /Extract:PathToInstall option e.g. Office_Professional_Plus_2010_64Bit_English_X16-32213.exe /extract:c:\tmp

SQL 2008 SP2 & Exchange 2010 SP1

Microsoft have released SQL Server 2008 SP2 and Exchange 2010 SP1 for distribution. We have tested SP2 for SQL here on v7.5.3 and have not noticed any issues currently.

SalesLogix v7.5.x & HTTP Sync

If you planning to install SalesLogix v7.5 on SQL Server 2008R2 with Windows 2008R2 and are using SalesLogix Web AND are planning on using HTTP(s) Sync – please contact us for more information. There are specific settings you will need to make in IIS v7 that are not very easy to locate but need to be done, otherwise this will not work.

Exchange 2010 & Outlook 2003

Recently, we were setting up a new environment for a customer whereby they are using Exchange 2010 on Windows 2008R2 (64bit) but using Outlook 2003 SP3 as the client. Ordinarily, this shouldn’t have been an issue but we experienced some latency issues with mail handling. After checking out the normal network side and discovering nothing amiss we researched the issues (also more commonly known as Google!) and discovered this is a known but unsolvable issue. Apparently Microsoft have removed the UDP notifications which means that Outlook reverts to polling to discover changes made the mailbox. More information can be found here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009942 but the result is still not a good experience for users. Upgrading to Outlook 2007/10 would solve the issue but was obviously not budgeted for in this particular case – so beware! Also, you should be aware that, by default, Exchange 2010 requires encryption between the client and the server – see more here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2006508. So, all in all, some very important changes to be aware of if you are considering the upgrade.

Update: 8th May 2011. This has now been resolved by Microsoft! See this knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009942

Update: 24th June 2010. Thankfully, installing Outlook 2010 does solve the issue noted above. However, if you are planning on using this with SalesLogix (any version) be aware that you should only install the 32bit version of Office 2010 – even if you are working on a 64bit platform. Currently, no version of SalesLogix will work with any of the 64bit Office applications – such as Word mail-merge or Outlook integration. There are other known issues with office add-ins or extensions and Microsoft recommend that 64bit versions of Office be restricted to environments that do not require integration or add-ins. Virtualisation + Windows 2008R2/SQL2008R2

Having implemented several new sites with Windows 2008R2 and SQL2008R2 we can confidently assist any customers/prospects who are unsure of whether these platforms are supported and worth moving to. Backed up with full VMWare Virtualisation support, we continue to set trends in these areas with customers reporting an overall decrease in issues and an increase in overall uptime of their systems providing rock solid reliability and performance in excess of those provided in Windows 2003. We fully believe that this is due to the 64-bit kernel support [we only implement on 64bit] that ensures (a) lack of access to the OS at “super admin” level and (b) drivers have to pass stringent controls to ensure interoperability with Windows 2008R2. This ensures that poorly written drivers are kept away from the OS and cannot be installed. Whilst this may result in [currently] lower device support than prior versions – we still believe this to be a good result overall.

SAS/SATA or SCSI

For anyone considering this question – without a doubt and after careful research we can confirm that SAS will give the best performance disk sub-system compared with SATA. However, the current downside is cost. Presently, you can purchase vast quantity of disk (1TB single disks are available for under £100) but disk throughput at 1.5Gbps and speed will restrict the overall performance. Conversely, a 600Gb SAS disk is over £400 per unit. Considering you need a minimum of 3 to make a RAID5 volume it quickly works out expensive ! However, you will not regret the decision – with throughput at 6.0Gbps and 15k RPM drives the quantity of data shifted easily outperforms the SATA/SCSI configurations that were once the norm! So, if you are in the market for new server and disk sub-system – be sure to understand that quantity does not equal performance. A combination of performant disks for operational data and a NAS device for quantity strikes an excellent balance with cost. Talk to us for more information!

Windows 7 – Released on October 22nd 2009

As we are sure you are aware, Windows 7 is released on October 22nd – with launch parties occuring throughout the world! We’ve been running this in-house (x64 only) since its release to Microsoft Partners and are happy to report that, along with most of the media – Microsoft seems to have cracked this release! Great driver support, less resource requirements, faster performance and exceptionally stable – we believe this will be the version that most businesses will upgrade to, from Windows XP. SalesLogix will be certified for Windows 7 with the imminent release of v7.5.2 but, please note, earlier versions such as 6.2 & 7.0 will not be natively supported on this platform. Whilst Microsoft offers “Windows XP Mode” it’s important to note that this is a virtual PC (Microsoft Virtual PC in fact) albeit a “lighter” version and not really a “mode”. You can access applications from the Win7 Start menu (applications that are installed within the VPC are automatically published from within the VPC and then appear on your local Start menu) and the application acts as if it were part of the core OS – but it’s reliant upon a virtual environment in order to operate. This does mean, however, that the machine requires adequate resources in order to perform optimally. Whilst we have tried this mode, we found an important issue in that it “hooks” to the virtualisation mode of the physical CPU – which is fine, provided you are not planning on using any other virtualisation software such as VMWare. Once latched, Microsoft VPC will not relenquish control of virtualisation until the service (vpc.exe) is stopped/killed – which is unfortunate if you want to use both VPC and VMWare (as we do on a daily basis !). By stopping the service – the entire virtual PC has to then be loaded again. We find this a real shame/show-stopper for multiple virtualisation environments and hope that changes in the future. Update: Microsoft listened, on Thursday Mar 18th 2010 – this restriction was removed and Intel VT support is no longer required. .

Also, if you are running Win7 with nVidia drivers and use a laptop with docking station – you may find that Aero is stopped when docked/undocked (quick tip – right click the desktop, change resolution and then revert/cancel the change restores Aero). Update: As of the fixes released on Tuesday 20th Oct 2009 (KB974431) – this problem has been resolved.

Operating in a Virtual Environment

Many customers have asked us about operating SalesLogix in a virtual environment. Virtualisation technology, such as those offered by VMWare Inc. and Microsoft, offer many business benefits such as reducing power requirements, optimising usage of existing servers and reducing management overhead of physical servers. However, it can have downsides as well and, prior to implementing, should be combined with a well designed infrastructure and constructed plan of action.

Installing SalesLogix on a virtual server is exactly the same as a physical environment. There are no special requirements and no configurations that you need to be aware of. However, by its nature a virtual environment (simply by being virtualised) has the ability to constrain performance as resources are dynamically added to and removed. Careful consideration should be given to the amount of virtual servers installed on one physical server – along with the amount of memory/disk/processors allocated to the SalesLogix virtual server. It’s most likely you will see a drastic improvement in performance initially – as you will have been allocated virtual resources beyond what you have already in a physical environment. Issues can occur after this point when more and more virtual servers are added – this leads to resource bottlenecks and performance drops below what you had physically – with frequent user complaints based on performance that is exhibited by SalesLogix, but is a direct relation to the use of virtualisation without effective management of those virtualised resources. Microsoft also fully embrace virtualisation, a situation that has changed since the released of Windows 2008 R2 and their own hypervisor. Whilst it is totally possible to also virtualise Microsoft SQL Server (no special setup required) – we, as a company, can only recommend that you do this should your server have the requisite processing power/memory requirements to ensure each server is not “starved” of virtual resources, otherwise performance will suffer as a result.

We have many customers using virtualisation and can fully support you – but you should be aware that Sage have still not certified any products with any virtualisation servers at this time but, as is always the case, this is not the same as it not working at all. Prior to making the switch, please liaise with us of the potential setup of your virtual environment and resource planning so that we can advise further.

Issue with SalesLogix 64-bit

Update: 06-08-09 – This issue is now corrected with SLX 7.5.1 Hot-Fix 17. Find out more. We are aware of an issue with SalesLogix operating within a 64-bit environment. This results in poor rendering of certain views, scrollbar error messages and other cosmetic issues. This issue has absolutely no bearing upon data integrity and is limited to purely to a cosmetic/UI issue.

Windows 7 Release Candidate

We completed some early testing of SalesLogix and Windows 7 and the results so far are encouraging – the issues found in January have now been resolved. We installed the RC (.7100) release of Windows 7 Ultimate and then installed SQL/Express 2005. We then installed the SalesLogix 7.5.1 LAN Admin, Architect Sync and Remote Client. All ran smoothly and worked perfectly afterward. However, you may find it prompts to reboot during the upgrade to SP1. Ensure you press OK at this point – but it does not reboot. We suggest you reboot after the installation of Service Pack 1 for SalesLogix anyway.

Having gained a lot of traction over the last few months, Windows 7 entered the public beta phase earlier this month. However, as you could expect, no version of SalesLogix is ready for this release and it is most certainly not certified at this stage! If you do wish to trial, which we have, and found several issues, be sure to use a virtualised environment!

Issue with ‘ExportGridToExcel’ function

We have noticed that this function is no longer working correctly in 7.2 Service Pack 2. The issue manifests itself by exporting just one column heading (and not the expected x cols, y rows). The issue can be resolved by applying Hot-Fix 2 available from the FTP site.

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (“Longhorn”) & “x64” Platforms

Whilst not certified by Sage at this time, we do have customers running on this platform. Notably, the installation worked fine and the performance on Windows 2008 appears to be stunning! The server utilised is running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 Edition with 16Gb of RAM (it’s also a Terminal Server). On logout there was an issue with SLXProfiling.dll – but that was resolved by applying SalesLogix 7.2 Service Pack 2. You can find more information in the Compatibility Checklist.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (“Katmai”)

[CTP February 2008] We have tried this version internally, for testing purposes only. Currently, this is not supported and there are several issues with attempting to run SalesLogix on this platform notably: –

• The installer will fail to install the evaluation databases correctly
• The SQL Native Client has been renamed to “SQL Native Client 10.0” and, currently, cannot be setup as a valid connection within the SalesLogix Connection Manager.
• Using the SQL OLEDBProvider is not recommended, due to speed issues – see this image for more information on connection details

We have installed this in a test environment, without SalesLogix. As this is based on the Vista code-base we fully expect it to be supported by SalesLogix v7.2 and 7.02 but will require certification and testing by Sage. We will update this page as more information becomes available.

Windows Vista Support

Sage SalesLogix 7.2 fully supports Windows Vista (Business+ Editions) and Sage SalesLogix 7.0 SP2 now supports Microsoft Windows Vista (all Business editions).
